Our Mission

Dickinson Trail Network (DTN) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit group of dedicated volunteers whose mission is to build, maintain, and promote a network of non-motorized trails throughout Dickinson County.

The three pillars of our group are Trails, Partnerships, and Community.

"Dickinson Trail Network builds trails through partnerships that connect our community"

Our goal is to provide an excellent source of outdoor recreation that is easily accessible to local residents and combines exciting terrain with our area’s incredible natural beauty.  We hope this aids local businesses in recruiting young professionals with their families.  DTN also strives to attract tourists and mountain biking enthusiasts to Dickinson County and increase foot traffic and commerce to all businesses in this area.

DTN was originally founded by Bob Werner in 2007 as the Dickinson County Bike Path. It began as part of an effort to implement a county-wide bike path system, eventually securing its status as a 501(c)(3) tax exempt entity in June 2009. The organization began running the Tour de Dickinson family bike ride (which previously had been operated by The Dickinson County Hospital Foundation) a little over ten years ago. DTN has worked with various cities, townships, counties, and state and private organizations for the past 15 years establishing and providing signage for over 40 miles of bike routes on roadways in Dickinson County. In 2018, DTN started constructing multi-use trails with the cooperation of the cities of Norway and Iron Mountain to promote tourism and economic development for the area. That trail system has grown to over 40 miles today. DTN recently also partnered with Pine Mountain to provide volunteer support for its new and highly anticipated trail system.

Current projects of DTN include year-round maintenance of trail systems on Millie Hill and Pine Mountain and at the Fumee Lake Natural Area in Iron Mountain, and the Ogee Trail System in Norway. DTN is also currently in the process of assisting the City of Iron Mountain in building 6 miles of new trails on Pewabic Hill in Iron Mountain, construction of which is expected to commence in 2024. From an events standpoint, DTN is proud to sponsor and host the area’s annual Tour de Dickinson, which, in addition to providing a fun event for locals, brings hundreds of people from outside of the community to Iron Mountain.
